Frugality musing

April 27th, 2008 at 12:38 pm

HI All

Well I have been keeping track of anything I do frugally. In the month of April my spending of food items has gone up but I have been mostly buying everything on sale and stockpiling a little more than I normally do. There are some financial experts that tell you not to do this. I don't agree. I feel that I am cost-averaging my food purchases. Since I only buy on sale, it makes sense to stock up.

What reason do these experts give to say not to stock up on sale items, especially something like food, that you would surely use? Do they just mean that it might spoil before you get to it

A few experts are saying that it isn't cost effective to have lots of food around. You will overeat, have to find ways to store it, it will go bad and it isn't an effective way to use your money, especially if you have a lot of debt.

For me my only debt is my house. We don't overeat, I make sure that it doesn't go bad. For me personally I dollar cost average my purchases so that I can effectively use my money better. Rather than pay $14.99 a pound for t-bones, by buying a side of beef, I pay 1.64 a pound for t-bones and they are packaged and trimed the way we like. Same with other foods.

I only buy in bulk (or dollarcost averaging) foods that we use on a consist basis. Foods that are a little more infrequent I buy when needed.
